Genetically modofied crops in west africa

http://changents.com/rachelzedeck/blog-posts/more-african-nations-undertake-gm-crop-trials

With the growing population in west africa, crops need to be produced at a faster rate and with less attack from pests and harsh weather. The GMOs will increase the production of crops, but what effect will they have on the humans and animals that consume these crops and will these effects be positive or negative?
